Faustina
I am Camillaâs only sibling. I am sixty-six and I have a strong personality. I tend to prevail over all the other people. When we start a fight, I am surely the winner. This is the reason why people think I am the eldest child in the family. When we meet at our mumâs we hardly talk to each other. We spend our time there chatting about trivial things and tittle-tattling. Camilla looks subdued and keeps listening to me. The way she looks at me makes me catch what I really stand for her: a pathetic little woman. So, I react even more angrily and continue to be at odds with her. I canât stand her superiority.
I was a lawyer, while Camilla was a primary school teacher and had a child. Camilla left school with a teaching diploma. Our father used to say that all his children (including our two brothers who died some years ago) should obtain a diploma or a degree and start their own career. I was very well-determined, got enrolled in a university and received a degree in law. My brothers and sisters just left school with a diploma. So, I could boast a degree, which made me ever more self-aware, but most of all I was acting very bossily. The more I was acting full of myself, the less charming I was looking. In few words, I was very far from being like Camilla. She was beautiful, I was a little, plump woman who couldnât boast her refined culture and cleverness. What really widened the gap between the two of us is that she had a special gift: her daughter Luna. She was mother. I was a single woman.
After our dad died, we only bumped into each other during the lunch hour at mumâs. Our personalities were so different. I was quite religious, while Camilla was atheist. I was a conservative person, Camilla was a liberal woman. Despite all such differences, I really loved Luna and cared for my only niece. Every summer I used to invite mum, Camilla and Little Luna to spend their holidays at my house in Villasimius, close to the seaside. Some years later, Luna gave birth to two baby girls. Our summer holidays were amazing. We will never forget them.
I was very proud of my job, which was quite a good trade-off between high ambitions and a trivial appearance. In short, it made me feel like a prestigious woman who didnât have to care about her look. Anyway, I used to have quite a few admirers. Among my wooers was a widow. He was a wealthy man, but he was recalling the memories of his beloved wife all the time. This, coupled with the two daughters of him constantly around, made things very annoying. Our relationship got to the end very soon. There is one more thing I need to add: the widow took a fancy to Camilla, but my sister didnât pay him a second glance.
The fact that Camilla and I didnât get on well has nothing to do with that story.
